My Credit Union

So I got a letter from my credit union the other day telling me that my account has been inactive since May 2005. They're letting me know that if my account remains inactive for 2 years, they'll be forced to start charging me a monthly maintenance fee of $5.

First of all, I appreciate that they are giving me 11 month's notice to make a change. That's very thoughtful. (In fact, some people might find it rather, uh, premature.)

Second of all, they were kind enough to tell me what I should do to reactivate my account.

I should
  1. Make a deposit OR
  2. Make an account transfer OR
  3. Make a withdrawal.

Yes, they don't like it when I just let my money sit there doing nothing, so much so that they would prefer that I take some money away from them instead.

Sigh.

Yes, that is crazy especially since an inactive account would seemingly generate less work on their end. Then again, how many times have we read stories in the news where people deposited money in their bank accounts and then fled the state? They have to do something to stop this kind of outrageous behavior, short of building bigger banks.

(P.S. I love your blog!)
