Interesting (to me, at least) news

I-275 renamed for SPC Alumnus Bill Cramer and city of St. Petersburg

In a ceremony today (Wed., March 1), the stretch of I-275 from the Howard Frankland Bridge to the Sunshine Skyway Bridge was renamed for one of St. Petersburg College’s most distinguished alums, William C. Cramer, Class of ’43. A highway marker with the new name of the roadway, St. Petersburg Parkway/William C. Cramer Memorial Highway, was officially unveiled by Mr. Cramer’s widow, Sara, at 2 p.m. at a rest area just north of the Sunshine Skyway Bridge. About 150 people, including many SPC alumni, attended the ceremony. SPC President Carl M. Kuttler Jr. presided at the dedication ceremony. Mr. Cramer died in October 2003.

As a member of Congress, U.S. Rep. Cramer co-authored in 1956 the legislation that created the Interstate Highway System. Later he co-sponsored legislation that extended I-75 to the West Coast of Florida and the 1-275 link through Pinellas County. A bill, naming the roadway for Mr. Cramer, was passed in the Florida Legislature in April 2004.

Mr. Cramer was president of his 1943 class at SPC. Following his distinguished career in Congress, he returned to SPC as a faculty member and served as a member of the SPC Alumni Association Board of Directors. In 1992, he was named SPC’s Most Outstanding Alumnus. In 2004, he was inducted posthumously into SPC’s Hall of Distinction.
