Hyperbole

Exaggeration for the sake of effect: a definition I remember from high school English. Normally I get it just fine. But there are a couple of examples from car commercials that just bug, and I thought I should share them with you.

  • There's a commercial that shows a man kissing his wife goodbye in the morning as he heads out the door to work. He proceeds to strap on a helmet, and jump off a cliff to get to his ridiculous SUV that waits for him at the bottom. Now, it's not the cliff jumping that bugs me. What I can't help but wonder is how the hell he gets back home at night.

  • There's another commercial that I think is for a hybrid of some sort; at any rate, it's touting its amazing gas mileage. So the car drives down the road with the driver smiling as they pass a road sign that says "Next Gas: 400 and something miles." (470 something? I'm not sure of the exact number.) Anyway, that's great that this person doesn't have to worry about stopping for gas thanks to his terrific new car.

My problem is that even if I do stop there and fill up with gas, with my 12 gallon gas tank, getting 30 mpg, I'm still gonna run out of gas before the next station. Are there really roads in America where they're designed for most people to just run out of gas? I'm afraid that even if I called AAA, the tow truck would run out of gas before it got to me!
